AAAC JULY 2020 RUN
SUNDAY 19th July 2020
ROCKER COVER RACE REPORT
Showers in the morning, clearing in the afternoon was the forecast for the day which might have kept some of the regular race contestants at home. The Marion Council’s closure of the BBQ facility was disappointing, however, where there’s a will, there’s a way, and the event was held as programmed following the lifting of outdoor restriction numbers.
The programme for the day was BYO lunch, chairs and picnic set, followed by the Rocker Cover Races.
A small gathering of the faithful had lunch and socialised (at a distance) before deciding the set up the race track as members kept an eye on the weather and then as numbers grew, made it a viable event.
John Badcock acted as race organiser and scorer again this year, thanks John.
Rob Green brought the track and with many willing helpers, set it up and later dismantled in no time, Thanks to Rob and his merry men.
Due to social distancing requirements, Shane Conry acted as starter, reminding contestants to position their racers one person at a time and by using a clamp on the starting mechanism to hold the racers in place was then able to release them once contestants moved away.
Edd Gray brought along half a dozen or so of his proto types so other members could participate as well. Thanks again Edd, especially appreciated by the kids.
First went the kids who selected their racers, set them up and ran to the finish line to judge the winner. Junior boy champion was Noah and junior girl champion was Amelia.
Second heat was the Ladies event and won by Chris Gray.
Lastly, the open event, which the kids were again involved in due to the numbers of space racers. One particular racer of Edd’s was piloted by no other than Mini Mouse, a regular driver. Unfortunately her racer crashed frequently and she was thrown from her vehicle at least 3 times. Dennis Fordham’s vehicle had wheel alignment problems and broadsided at the halfway mark after running off to the side. Rob Green’s racer ran fast and true each time and was the overall Champion for 2020. This is the first year Rob himself actually won the event.
The winners were presented with their prizes and Rob was presented with the perpetual trophy by Shane Conry.
Hopefully, next year’s event will be back to normal and we can enjoy a BBQ and be “normal again”. This event is ideally suited for those who like to socialise with other members and one that the young ones can participate in with their families. Every child wins a prize, this year they took home lolly bags, so they will be catered for. If we get enough kids, we may hold a tug of war for them too.

ON A SAD NOTE
In preparing the details for the July 19th Rocker Cover Races contact was made with Reg Courteney’s wife Christine.
We were saddened to hear that very recently Christine and Reg’s eldest daughter Andrea succumbed also to Cancer at the age of 51.
She leaves behind her husband Tom & daughter Lauren and step children.
Most regrettably, Andrea’s brother, Leigh who lives in Switzerland and never made it to the service, having got caught up in quarantine in Brisbane.
Sarina, her younger sister did the eulogy and she also did one for Reg a few years ago.
The Club Committee and Members pass on our deepest sympathy to Christine and family for their loss.
