Steve Thiseltons GT6
Steve Thiselton's 1970 Triumph GT6
I bought the Primrose Yellow 1970 Triumph GT6 in 1990 after my first year in Canberra. I thought I needed to get something interesting to drive. My everyday car in the 90's was a 1969 Mazda 1800, you know those 60's sedans with the Bertone styled body. Due to it being Canberra an open top car was out of the question and with the Canberra motorways it needed a big enough engine to keep up with the traffic.
So in reading Unique Cars magazine I spied the GT6 for sale, had a quick inspection and was assured with not a lot of work it would run. I had it trucked to the ACT and then I trailered to my home. It did start but a number of jobs were required a new alternator, carburettor overhaul, new tail lenses, the radiator out for a flush, numerous electrical gremlins, a new steering rack, a new water pump, new shocks etc. Some parts were missing and I bought a wrecked Spitfire to get the remaining parts I needed. The Mazda 1800 gave way to an Austin Tasman as it a had a tow bar, so the GT6 could be ferried to workshops.
Eventually the day came when I thought I was ready for the ACT Government road worthiness inspection. I think it was 1995, it passed with flying colours and became my daily drive from then on.
Longest Run? It has been on numerous drives from Canberra to Adelaide and return, and in 1996 I took it on a fishing trip with my mate Trev to Eyre Peninsula getting as far as Penong & Ceduna. Boy was that a cramped trip.
The GT6 got a respray to Triumph Lightening Yellow in 2005 prior to changing to SA Rego and if memory serves it was the first car I placed on Historic rego with the AAAC.
So in the year 2018 the GT6 is now 48 years old and I’ve owned it for 28 years, the longest I've ever owned any car. People say that British cars are quirky but i have found the GT6 to be a straightforward and reliable car. Most of all it was great fun. Steve Thiselton
