James Borgas's 1969 Ford Zephyr mk4 James Borgas's 1969 Ford Zephyr mk4
James Borgas's 1969 Ford Zephyr mk4. 10 years ago I had the opportunity to puchase a Mk4 Zephyr when a former club member from the Zephyr club put it up for sale. I was immediately interested as I knew the car well and had always admired it. A price was decided upon and I purchased it. The car was an automatic and ran on gas and petrol. The body needed to be resprayed because it was a mixture of diffent coloured blue and green. After having problems with the gas system I decided to replace it and invest in a better system but i still had the occasional problem. Often the gas would freeze up and once when I was at Yunta the motor wouldn't kick over with gas or petrol. After leaving the bonnet up for several hours in the sun hey presto it started. Later I removed the …
Steve Thiseltons GT6 Steve Thiseltons GT6
Steve Thiselton's 1970 Triumph GT6 I bought the Primrose Yellow 1970 Triumph GT6 in 1990 after my first year in Canberra. I thought I needed to get something interesting to drive. My everyday car in the 90's was a 1969 Mazda 1800, you know those 60's sedans with the Bertone styled body. Due to it being Canberra an open top car was out of the question and with the Canberra motorways it needed a big enough engine to keep up with the traffic. So in reading Unique Cars magazine I spied the GT6 for sale, had a quick inspection and was assured with not a lot of work it would run. I had it trucked to the ACT and then I trailered to my home. It did start but a number of jobs were required a new alternator, carburettor overhaul, new tail lenses, the radiator ou…

Helen Button Spitfire Helen Button Spitfire
Helen Buttons's Triumph Spitfire I've always loved old cars and as my family are from the UK my grandfather had an MG and Triumph Herald when I grew up. In 2013 I found "Tommy" on Carsales in Melbourne. I phoned Joseph and asked him if we had plans for the following weekend because I'd bought two tickets to Melbourne for the day to look at the Spitfire. We flew in at 9am, took the Triumph for a test drive and I bought him straight away. We flew home 2pm the same day! "Tommy" was transported via train to Adelaide a few days later. Being a Triumph owner yourself you'd know the issues such a car can have. We have completely rebuilt the engine and gearbox, and he needed a tune up as he was running a bit rich (used to blow smoke). A new w…
Graham Banks MERC 380SKC Graham Banks MERC 380SKC
Graham and Vanda Banks MERCEDES BENZ 380SLC I bought the car two years ago from a panel beater friend in Adelaide, saving it from being wrecked for parts. The car was converted to LP Gas in October 2000. The last person to register the car was a lady in Macedon Victoria who allegedly would not let her husband drive it. That registration ran out in 2010 with 92,000 kms on the clock. The engine fired up and ran first go every time but needed tuning. Parts had deteriorated over time, the spark plug leads lit up like a Christmas tree. I replaced the spark plug leads, rotor cap and rotor, changed the spark plugs to the correct LP Gas plugs. The viscous fan coupling and drive belts were next. The LP Gas converter was replaced and the gas tank removed, pressure tested, stam…

Gavin Farmer: JAPANESE MAVERICK The Subaru ff-1 Gavin Farmer: JAPANESE MAVERICK The Subaru ff-1
CLUB MEMBER Gavin Farmer SUBARU FF-1: JAPANESE MAVERICK The Subaru ff-1 was a rather remarkable motor car, especially so coming from the very conservative Japanese automobile industry. Back in the mid-60s when it was first shown at the Tokyo Motor Show almost all of the other Japanese car makers were building cars to the same recipe—front engine-rear drive with suspension, braking and steering systems that reflected the ultra-conservative thinking of English  and American makers. Innovation was an anathema.  Our car, RCW-403, is the only Subaru ff-1 1100 registered on the road in Australia making it quite a rare, unique and perhaps valuable car.  I bought it from Geoff Ford, retired managing director of Holdfast Motors who were the import…

INEZ JOHNSON INEZ JOHNSON
MY EARLY VEHICLES INEZ JOHNSON When I first came to South Australia in 1960 I worked first as a mothercraft nurse in the babies’ nursery at Calvary. Later than same year I moved to Woodside and worked at the Onkaparinga District Hospital, for the next 2 ½ years. My first vehicle was a Lambretta scooter and I needed a licence, so went to the Woodside Police Station and sat the test, failed the first attempt but was successful a few days later, then I could start to learn to ride the scooter, Johnson Road Ambleside was my training road an with someone on the back shouting in my ear how to change gears, then practising on my own for a whole day, I was able to ride on the road and get about. After one winter in the hills wet and cold riding was not so good, so I…
